The House of Terror

Andrássy Road is the capital's most beautiful thoroughfare. Straight as an arrow, flanked by marvellous mansions and dignified dwellings, this tree-lined avenue connects the inner city with Heroes'Square. It was named for one oftheAustro-Hungarian Monarchy's most eminent statesmen, CountJulius (Gyula) Andrássy. Oddly enough both twentieth-century terror regimes, the Arrow Cross and the communists, chose one of the buildings in this splendid avenue as the headquarters of their organs of coercion.
