Woe to the vanquished! Forced into slavery
Author: House of Terror Museum
In its full-year series of programs in 2005, entitled Hungarian Tragedy, 1945 – Woe to the Vanquished! Forced into Slavery - the House of Terror Museum commemorates the close on seven hundred thousand Hungarian citizens carried off into Soviet captivity following the Second World War.
History books keep silent about their fate. The reason for the silence is consciously generated ignorance. It is the museum’s aim to create a document collection from written recollections and interviews with survivors, which will keep alive the hitherto suppressed history of Soviet thraldom.
The temporary exhibition was opened at 5 o’clock in the afternoon on Friday February 25 by the President of the Republic, Ferenc Mádl. Zoltán Pokorni, Vice-President of the Fidesz Hungarian Civic Party and Béla Keményfi, a survivor gave commemorative addresses, while Mária Schmidt, Chief-Director of the museum welcomed the gathering.
